Merton L. Hadley, 91, of 315 Coleman St., passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the Absolut of Allegany, following a lengthy illness.
Merton was born Feb. 16, 1925 in Jamestown and was a son of Horace and Gladys Worden Hadley. He was formerly married to Genevieve Mushrush, who predeceased him in 1972. On July 1, 1981, at the First Free Methodist Church in Franklinville, he married Doris Moses, who survives.
Merton worked for Breyers Ice Cream for about 7 years and then for the railroad for several years, before going to work for the Ontario Knife factory in Franklinville, for 25 years, retiring in 1990 due to illness. He volunteered for the Lynn Wood Center, and received several awards for his volunteer work. Merton was formerly a member of the Franklinville VFW. He was former member of the Franklinville Baptist Church, where he was the bell ringer and a deacon and the First Free Methodist Church where he was a deacon. Merton is a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.
Merton enjoyed wood carving and received many "blue" ribbon awards. He also enjoyed being an artist and writing poems and short stories. Merton had a great imagination. He played the harmonica.
Along with his loving wife, Merton is survived by one son, Joseph Scott (Cathy) Hadley of Hemet, CA; one daughter, Dona P. Heiman of Williamsville; one stepson, Michael C. (Kathleen) Martin of Ischua; one stepdaughter, Judith L. (Albert) Carlson of Birmingham, AL; one grandson, Keith Heiman; two step granddaughters, Tamara (Robert) Loera of Hemet, CA, and Christine (Steve) Ogden of Hemet, CA; several great and great great grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Tanner of Franklinville; one sister-in-law, Betty Frigo of Ischua; and several nieces & nephews.
Along with his first wife, Merton was predeceased by a grandson, Logan Hadley in 1992; a brother, Warren Hadley; and a sister, Virginia Hadley.
Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., #646 E. State St., Olean on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, at which time a Memorial Service will be held. The Rev. Suzanne M. Block, Pastor of the Christ United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be at the Maplehurst Cemetery in Hinsdale. Online condolences may be made by clicking the button above.
