Donald F. Johnston

Donald F. Johnston of Houston, Texas, passed away on November 15, 2010 at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Mr. Johnston was born on January 22, 1944, the son of Russell and Florence Sheridan Johnston of Cuba, New York where he still resided during the summer months. He also enjoyed spending winters with friends at his home in Estero, Florida. Mr. Johnston graduated from Cuba Central School in 1961 and attended Monroe Community College in Rochester; the State University of NY at Fredonia and the University of Pittsburg at Bradford, Pa. Mr. Johnston worked as a construction inspector in New York beginning in 1968 and later as an inspector/ construction manager for private firms on large municipal government contracts in Saint Croix and Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands and Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas until his retirement in 2003. Don served in the US Army during 1966-1968. He was a medic in Viet Nam with the Third Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division headquartered in Pleiku and awarded the Combat Army Medics Badge for his service. Don served as past Vice-Commander of the Cuba American Legion Post 655, and was a charter/ life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2721 Cuba. During the 1960's Don entertained, playing piano and organ in the Cuba and Olean areas. He also played piano in resorts on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. All his many friends frequently asked him to sit and play for them, a real treat to hear which they will never forget. Don enjoyed traveling with close friends and he was a good friend to many who will never forget his generous and kind hearted friendship. Mr. Johnston is survived by his niece, Rebecca Johnston of Rochester, New York. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert in 1989 and his parents, Russell Johnston in 1963 and mother, Florence Johnston in 2003. Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. 24 Genesee Pkwy, Cuba on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at which time a Memorial Service will be held. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, Pastor of the Cuba First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be with his family in the Cuba Cemetery, Cuba with full military honors accorded by the Cuba American Legion Post 655. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the SPCA or to a charity of the donor's choice. Condolances may be made by clicking on the above button.
