David E. Johnson

June 26, 1937 — February 4, 2013

David E. Johnson passed away Monday Feb. 4, 2013 in the Olean General Hospital, following an illness. Mr. Johnson was born June 26, 1937 in Jamestown and was the son of Genard and Vema Wood Johnson. On Aug. 29, 1960 he married his loving wife of 39 years, Karen E. Weiser, who predeceased him on Dec. 27, 1999. On Feb. 14, 2002 he married Catherine A. Longe, who survives. Mr. Johnson was 1955 graduated Falconer High School. He served in the United States Navy from Aug. 17, 1955 to Aug. 7, 1959. Mr. Johnson graduated from SUNY Fredonia in 1963 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He taught music at Ellicottville High School from 1963 to 1966. After moving to Olean he continued teaching at Olean High School until his retirement in 1992. While at Olean High School in addition to being the music teacher he also was the band director and he chaired the department for about 15 years. Mr. Johnson also taught music theory. Dave was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church. He enjoyed cooking, gardening and playing a euphonium in the Allegany Friends & family Band where he also was the conductor. Dave was also a referee for basketball and a coach & umpire for baseball. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the St. Bonaventure Golf Course. Dave enjoyed wood working at home and enjoyed doing lot of projects for Pumpkinville in Great Valley. In addition to his wife, Dave is survived by three sons, David E. (Lisa) Johnson of Cincinnati, OH, Mark E. (Elizabeth) Johnson of Cincinnati, OH, and Kenneth E. Johnson of Olean; two stepchildren, Daniel J. (Lorena) Filip of San Jos�, Ca, and Susan M. Filip of Atlanta, Ga.; five granddaughters, Kristen M. (Derek) Wilson, Jennifer M. Johnson, Elizabeth R. Johnson, Kelsey N. Johnson, and Sara N. Johnson; two grandsons, Nicholas M. (Rondalyn) Johnson, and Jacob N. Johnson; one step grandson, Nicolas A. Filip; two great grandchildren, Jayden T. & Carsen L. Johnson; one sister, Alice J. Camerson of Jamestown; and several nieces & nephews. In addition to his first wife, Mr. Johnson was predeceased by one sister, Constance Ann Johnson in 1936. Friends will be received Thursday Feb. 7, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm & 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, Olean. Funeral services will be held at the Christ United Methodist Church on Friday, Feb 8, 2013 at 10:00 am. The Rev. William & Rev. Kristen Allen, Co-Pastor's, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, NY. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to OHS Music Boosters, Olean High School 410 West Sullivan Street, Olean, New York 14760.
