Bernard E. Childs

Bernard E. Childs of 4115 S. Nine Mile Road Valley View Estates Lot 133, passed away on Saturday Nov. 11, 2017, following a short illness. Bernard was born on Aug. 4, 1932 in West Clarksville and was a son of Gerald E. and Thelma Jordan Childs. On April 17, 1950, he married his wife of 67 years, Marjorie L. Allen, who survives. Bernard served in the US Army from Aug. 1949 to Aug. 31, 1969, retiring after 20 years of service. He and his wife moved back to the area in Oct. 1972, where he worked for AVX in Research and Development Department and at Stroehmann's Bakery for about 10 years. In 1984, they returned to Mt. Springs, Texas where he worked for the brand new city "The Colony" as an electrical engineer, and he was the first person to have retired from there, in 1995. Bernard attended the Southside Chapel. He enjoyed working around the house, gardening, acting & singing in local productions, and playing Santa Claus. Bernard was a multifaceted man, who took pride in doing things right and excelled at his every endeavor. The man he was will live on through his wife and children; Sandra L. (Ponce) Yanez of Santa Fe, NM, Lawrence E. (Evelyn) Childs, Gerald A. (Katherine) Childs both of Mountain Springs, TX, Teresa A. (Michael) Neely of Olean, and Edward J. (Lori) Childs of Richburg; 17 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. Bernard has been reunited with his youngest son, Scott M. Childs, who made his final journey on May 19, 2000 and they are forever together with their God. Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean on Wed. Nov. 15, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. Dave Herne & the Rev. Al Batt of the Southside Chapel will officiate. Full military honors will be accorded by the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 Ritual Team. Committal service will be held on a future date at the New Hope Cemetery in Mt. Springs, TX. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 310 E. State St., Olean, NY 14760. Online condolences may be made by clicking the button above.
