Barbara E. Swarthout

Barbara Elizabeth Swarthout entered into rest on April 10, 2008 at the age of 87. She was born August 4, 1920 in Friendship, NY, the daughter of Ai Lewis and Jessie M. Middaugh and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a graduate of Friendship Central School and worked as a cashier at Friendship Market Basket and Red and White Stores. She served many years as a teller at First Trust Union Bank in Friendship and retired from there. She was a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church, a member and officer of the Friendship Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the Friendship Grange, the Friendship Legion Auxiliary, the Musical Literary Club, a 4-H leader and a talented seamstress. She lived in Mesa, Arizona and Allegany, NY for a number of years and had moved to Black Creek two years ago to be closer to family. In 1939 she married Leslie F. Swarthout who pre-deceased her in 1988. She is survived by their children, William W. Swarthout (Angela) of Hamilton, Montana, Marilyn (Swarthout ) Jordan (Charles) of San Pedro, California, Suellen (Swarthout) Buckley (Wayne) of Evans, Georgia, and Jacalyn (Swarthout) Aylor of Belmont, New York. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; David Swarthout of Delaware, James Swarthout (Mary) of Massachusetts, Brian Swarthout (Bonnie) of New Jersey, Janice (Swarthout) Brooks (Todd) of New Jersey, Heather Elliott of Santa Clara, New Mexico, Brent Jordan (Cicily) of Lakewood, California, Dale Jordan (Jennifer) of Mission Viejo, California, Joshua Buckley (Liberty) of Atlanta, Georgia and Elizabeth Buckley of Augusta, Georgia and eight great-grendchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Leslie L. Middaugh, Frederick L. Middaugh and Sister, Ida V. (Middaugh) Daniels. In 1990 she married Merle W. Swarthout who survives along with his children and grandchildren who have given her much love and support. A celebration of life service will be held at Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Cuba, NY at 1:00 PM, April 25, 2008. The Reverend Larry Poelma of First Baptist Church, Cuba, NY, will officiate. Private interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Friendship, NY. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Hospitals, in care of the Allegany or Cattaraugus County Shrine Clubs.
