William H. Sturdevant of 402 Second Avenue, passed away, Wednesday, June 20, 2012, in the Pines Health & Rehab in Olean, surrounded by his loving family.
Bill was born on May 3, 1924 in Phoenix, NY and was the son of William H. and Ella Barton Sturdevant, Sr. On September 2, 1950, he married Mary Weed, who survives.
Bill proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII, from Jan. 16, 1943 to Dec. 21, 1945. He was a salesman and agency manager at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. He was the general manager of Bartlett Country Club. Brown & Bigelow employed him as an advertising sales representative. Later, he enjoyed his own business, Sportstours, facilitating one day bus trips to: the theater, track, shopping, and dining. He was well known for his sense of humor and his speaking ability. He was famous for his recitation of "Casey at the Bat."
Bill volunteered for the Olean General Hospital, and the American Cancer Society. He was past Commander of the American Legion, Post 530, twice. He was a member of the Olean Knights of Columbus, The St. Stephen's Club, and the Pulaski Club.
Bill was a faithful member of St. John's Roman Catholic Church and St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Surviving Bill, besides his loving wife of 61 years, are two children, Peter J. Sturdevant of Olean, and Mary K Sturdevant of St. Petersburg, FL; two grandchildren, Mark and Candace Sturdevant; one great grandson, Andrew River Sturdevant.
Bill was predeceased by one sister, Thelma Ripley in 1989.
Friends will be received today, Friday, June 22, 2012 from 6-8 pm on at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., #646 East State Street, Olean. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 9:00 am in St. John's Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Sheedy, Pastor will celebrate. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
