Virginia L. Weitzel of 350 Front Street, Aspen Towner, formerly of Goodrich Ave, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010 in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cuba Memorial Hospital, Cuba, NY.
Born on September 10, 1915, in Olean, N.Y., she was a daughter of N. Oscar and Etta (Lucas) Bowersox. Her father nick-named her "Toots", before her mother decided on the name Virginia. On June 26, 1936, she married William E. Weitzel at the Olean First Methodist Church parsonage. William died on May 11, 1971.
She attended Grammar Schools in Olean and Allegany, N.Y. In late 1929, her parents, two brothers and Toots, moved to Torrance California. She graduated from Torrance High School, 1934, and the family returned to Olean July, 1934. She worked at Freitag's, Olean Tile Co., Olean Reactance Plant, Sibley and Grahm Ins. Co., and retired from the Olean General Hospital (Kitchen/ employee cafeteria Dept.), in August, 1975.
She loved all types of good music, reading, sewing, playing the ukulele, humor, chatting and writing to friends and relatives, and writing an occasional item to the Times Herald. She appreciated the obituaries, exception being this one, (and that's my final joke.)
She was a life member of Torrance High School Alumni Association, a charter member of the Olean Historical Society, Johnny Appleseed Festivals, former member of the Aspen Tower Tenants Association, a member of Olean Senior League, Olean General Hospital Retirees, and Olean Christ United Methodist Church.
