Margaret (Peggy) entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany on August 22, 1956; was received into the Congregation on August 15, 1957, and professed her final vows on August 16, 1964. Sister devoted herself to the life and mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for 65 years.
Sr. Peggy attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and St. Patrick High School, both in Lowell, MA, graduating in 1954. She attended St. Elizabeth Teachers College, Allegany, NY.
Sister dedicated 48 years to educating children and among them Congregational schools in New Jersey, Florida, Massachusetts and St. Pius X in Delevan, NY. She used her many gifts and talents serving in various positions at St. Clare, later to be called St. Patrick School in Buffalo. In 1982 she moved to Christ the King in Snyder, where she served as local minister of the community. For the next 26 years, Sr. Peggy was a 4th Grade Team Leader at the Diocesan Educational Campus in Buffalo until it closed in 2004.
She returned to Allegany, NY, in 2009 and served as the Assistant Archivist and volunteered in the Congregational Offices as the courier. In addition, she ministered with Sr. Pat Perry, OSF at Sr. Pat’s Home in Olean where she assisted with the residents. Her infectious laugh, beautiful smile and cheerful voice brought joy and happiness to all around her.
Sister is predeceased by her parents, Francis and Alice, brothers: William and John; three aunts: Srs. Marcella, Anita and Moira Mahoney, all Sisters of St. Mary of Namur out of Buffalo. She is survived by three brothers: Frank and his wife Alice, Raymond and his wife Cathy and Gerald; and several nieces and nephews. Among the nephews is the Rev. James Mahoney of the Archdiocese of Boston. Rev. Mahoney will be celebrating Sr. Peggy’s Mass of Christian Burial.
A wake service will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, January 10, 2022 in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on January 11, 2022 in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
