Daughter of: the late Mary F. Aherne Mackey and Daniel Mackey formerly of Albertson, NY
Received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1947, and professed her final religious vows on August 15, 1954.
Sister Margaret received her BS in Education from St. Elizabeth Teacher's College, Allegany, NY; MA in Mathematics from Boston College, Boston, MA; and MA in Religious Studies from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook, PA.
Sister Margaret faithfully lived the Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany and ministered in the field of education for over 40 years. From 1946 until 1965 Sister Margaret ministered in elementary schools and religious education programs at St. Elizabeth, Croghan, NY; St. Paul, Highland Park, NJ; St. Peter, Merchantville, NJ; St. Mary, Cortland, NY; and St. Margaret of Cortona, Winsted, CT. In 1965 Sister Margaret began ministering in High Schools at Bishop Verot, Ft. Myers, FL; St. Paul, St. Petersburg, FL; St. John the Baptist, West. Islip, NY. Sister next served in the area of Director of Religious Education in St. Agnes Parish, Blackwood, NJ; Assumption Parish, Wood-Ridge, NJ and St. Joseph Parish, Lincoln, NJ. From 1990 until her retirement in 2000, Sister Margaret was the Director of Evangelical and Parish Life for the Diocese of Trenton, NJ, and after retiring she volunteered at Martin House as a tutor.
Sister was predeceased by her parents; her sister Kathleen Gonyea; and brothers David and Daniel Mackey. Her survivors include her sister Veronica McWeeney; her brother Kevin Mackey; many nieces and nephews; and her Allegany Franciscan Sisters.
A Wake Service is scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at 6:30 P.M. at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse at 4:00 P.M. on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009. Interment will take place on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2009 in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, New York.
