Locust Grove, VA- Raymond C. Wagner
Raymond C. Wagner, 90, formerly of Hinsdale, passed away in Locust Grove, VA on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
Ray was born April 4, 1934, in Olean, to Chauncey L. and Ruth M. Carpenter Wagner. On April 28, 1956, in Trinity United Methodist Church he married his loving wife of 67 years, Patricia J. Hammond, who predeceased him on September 19, 2023.
He graduated from Hinsdale Central School in 1952. He earned his Bachelors from Houghton College, and his Masters from the University of Buffalo. Ray started working at a young age on his father’s farm on Wagner Hill Road and selling goods at the Olean Farmers Market. He worked numerous jobs as a young adult, including as a soda jerk at Hydrox Dairy and a clerk at the Exchange National Bank. He then worked at Clark Bros. before he accepted a teaching position at Hinsdale Central School in 1965, where he taught math and computer science until his retirement in 1995.
Advancing age couldn’t keep Ray from his love of the Bible, teaching, and praying. For the past year, Ray prepared and shared Bible studies twice a month at the county Senior Center to the delight of many. He also participated in world-wide prayer meetings via zoom conference calls.
In April, Ray travelled to Rochester to celebrate his 90th birthday surrounded by all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. More recently in July, Ray was again in Western New York to visit family and friends, including a special day watching his great-grandchildren run and play at Midway State Park. He cherished his limited time with his “great grands,” and we hope they will have fond memories of him.
We will miss Ray dearly but we celebrate his arrival in Heaven with his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Ray is survived by his children Barbara Wagner of Locust Grove, VA, David (Heidi) Wagner of Rochester, and Brenda Wagner of Chantilly, VA; four grandchildren: Stephanie (Dillon) Hall of Rochester, Carolyn (Andrew) Peck of Forest, VA, Katie Wagner of Rochester and Brian (Gloria) Wagner of Hamlin; six great-grandchildren: Ellie and Abbie Peck, Julie and Ethan Hall, Connor and Emma Wagner. He is also survived by his sister, Faith Pressler of Little Ferry, NJ, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat, his brothers, Wayne and Dale Wagner, and sister, Joyce Laird.
Friends will be received on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean.
