Norman W. Langfitt formerly of 806 Front Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 in the Absolut at Allegany, following a short illness surrounded by his loving family.
Norman Waverly Langfitt was born on March 20th 1924 in Shirley, West Virginia and was the son of Edward Lee and Golda Glee Knight Langfitt. On November 6, 1948, he married his wife of 47 years Sophie Bateski, who predeceased him on January 16, 1996.
Mr. Langfitt attended school in Eldred, PA. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1941-1945. Norman was stationed on the ship the U.S.S. Bear. Some missions included patrolling the waters off the coast of Greenland, Antarctica, and the South Pacific.
Norman was a former employee of Dastroms in Olean and was later employed at Dresser Clark Industries of Olean as a crane operator from 1949-1986. He was a lifetime member of the St. Stephan's Club. . Norman enjoyed listening to music, singing, playing cards, watching movie classics as well as football games and horseracing. Norman's true love was spending time with family and friends.
Norman is survived by two daughters, Noreen (Mike) Cook of Olean, and Diane (Jerry) Thomas of Harmony, PA; five grandchildren, Dan (Nicole) Cook of Olean, Jeff (Kimmie Vanderhoef) of Portville, Brian (Jess Moyer) Thomas of Harmony, PA, Chrystal (Tim) Zinkham of Harmony, PA, and Jacque Thomas of Dover, DE; six great grandchildren, Lia, Nora & Blake Cook, Brianna and Mikayla Thomas; a step great grandchild, Brayden Vanderhoef; a sister, Betty Coryell of Smethport, PA; and several nieces & nephews.
Along with his loving wife, Norman was predeceased by two sisters, Ruby Jean Carter & Genevieve Stone; and two brothers, Bob & Charles Langfitt.
Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, Olean on Tuesday Jan. 13, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and again on Wed. from 10:00 to 10:30 am at which time Funeral and Committal Services will be held. Deacon Richard Matthews of St. Mary of the Angels Church will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
