Norman H. Carlson of N 21st Street, passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 in the Pines Health & Rehab Center in Olean.
Born in Ischua on March 14, 1914 he was a son of Harry and Nelma Johnson Carlson. On Sept.28, 1946 in the Bethany Lutheran Church he married Eva V. Tenglund, who survives.
Mr. Carlson lived in Olean area since 1917 and graduated from Olean High School and Westbrook Academy. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from Feb. 5, 1941 to Sept. 22, 1945. Mr. Carlson served in the Pacific Theater of operation for 13 months and was awarded the Croix De Guerre by the French Army for his liaison work while serving with the 6th Army Group Headquarters in France. Mr. Carlson was an IRS agent for 30 years and he retired in 1975. He then became associated with Paul M. Caldwell, CPA in auditing and tax preparation.
Mr. Carlson was a life long member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and was church treasurer for many years. He was a life member in the Hinsdale American Legion Norton-Chambers Post 1434, Veterans of 108th Infantry WWII Association, Birch Run County Club, where he enjoyed playing golf, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, St. Bonaventure Athletic Club and the Olean YMCA. He enjoyed dancing, traveling, and going to St. Bonaventure Basket Ball Games where he held season tickets for many years.
Surviving Mr. Carlson besides his wife of almost 65 years are a daughter, Sonja M. Fernsted (Paul Rokitka); a granddaughter, Kymberli A. Fernsted; a brother, Duane (Andrea) Carlson; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Carlson was pre-deceased by two sisters, Vivian Hillman and Helen Carr; and a brother, Carl Everet Carlson.
Friends will be received in the Bethany Lutheran Church, 1 Leo Moss Drive, on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at which time funeral services will be held. The Rev. Marie A. Meeks, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Allegany Cemetery.
