John F. Whipple of 314 North 11th Street, Olean passed away on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009 at home following an illness.
Mr. Whipple was born on Jan. 4, 1930 in Olean and was son of Burnell C. and Ruth M. Holmes Whipple. On March 4, 1955 he married his wife of 42 years, Dorothy M. Hayes in Salamanca, she pre-deceased him on July 31, 1997.
Mr. Whipple served during the Korean War in the US Navy from Sept. 16, 1948 to Sept 15, 1949 and then in the Army Jan. 15, 1951 to Jan. 14, 1954. While in the service he was member of the 82nd Airborne Division. In 1955 he went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad where he retired from after 37 Years as a brakeman & conductor. Mr. Whipple was a member of the Olean VFW, Olean American Legion Post 0530 and the United Transportation Union. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, and to the beaches & spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren whom he loved very much.
Surviving Mr. Whipple are three sons, John F. (Elizabeth) Whipple of Olean, Michael D. (Karen) Whipple of Wilmington, NC., and Steven P. (Deborah) Whipple of Big Flats, NY.; a daughter, Linda M. (Tom) Whipple of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; five grandchildren, Mathew, Hillary, Alex, Michele and Robert Whipple; a brother, Walter (Betty) Whipple of Bolivar, and a sister, Rose Ide of Tucson, AZ.
Mr. Whipple was pre-deceased by three Brothers, Lyman, Robert & Richard Whipple; and one sister, Dorothy Carlson.
Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. 646 East State Street, Olean on Sunday Sept. 27, 2009 from 3-6 PM and on Monday Sept 28, 2009 from 10-11 AM at which time Funeral & Committal Services will be held. The Rev. Dr. Derick N. Cheek, Pastor of Imanual Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Allegany Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
