John R. Gavin

Rochester- John Richard Gavin VI – 3/31/1936 – 6/20/2023

John R. Gavin passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at the Strong Memorial Hospital.

John was born on March 31, 1936 in Olean and was the Son of Dr. John R. and Mary Catherine Durkin Gavin.  On June 20, 1964 in the St. Bonaventure Church, Allegany he married the love of his life Sarah A. Finn who predeceased him on January 24, 2020.

John was a 1958 graduate of St. Vincent Prep High School.  He continued his education at St. Bonaventure University where he obtained his bachelors degree in history.  John served 2 ears in ROTC while he attended St. Bonaventure University.  After graduation he served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 4 years.

John was in Knights of Columbus.  He was an avid sports fanatic especially for St. Bonaventure Basketball.  John was a kind soul that talked to everybody and loved chicken wings.

John is survived by; 4 children, Joan (James) Sponn, Mary Alice Gavin, John (Deb IQ) Gavin and Michael (Marcia) Gavin; sister Mary (Bill) McTigue; sister-in-law Mary Finn; 4 grandchildren Catherine, Alex, Michaela, and Caleb.

Along with his parents and loving wife, John was predeceased by his sister, Ann (Michael) Eskra.

Friends will be received on Thursday, June 22, 2023 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 1600 Mt Hope Ave, Rochester, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 10:00am.  The Rev. Gary Tyman, Pastor will celebrate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. Arrangements are under the direction of the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean.
