John C. Bigelow, age 89, 118 Freemon Terrace, Bath, NY , passed away Friday, October 10, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Bath, NY.
Mr. Bigelow was born on August 6, 1919 in Friendship, NY. He was the son of Roland J. & Pearl Ruby McEntee, Bigelow. On June 4, 1942 in the Christ Church, in Cuba NY he married his wife 66 years, Betty J. Campbell who survives him.
Mr. Bigelow attended Belmont high school for 3 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944 to 1946 as ships cook 3rd Class. Mr. Bigelow and his wife owned and operated the Belmont Dairy & Belmont Dairy Bar for several years. He was a machinist for William Laidlaw Co. in Belmont and for Ingersoll Rand in Painted Post, where he retired from in 1978. Mr. Bigelow was a life member of the Herbert DeLong American Legion Post #808 in Belmont. He Served on the Belmont Village Board and was a volunteer fireman in Belmont for 30 years. He was a member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Belmont.
Besides his wife he is survived by his son Douglas J. (Martha) Bigelow of Bath, NY; three sisters, Lena Brooks of Wellsville, Pauline (Ronald) Miller of Belmont, and Thelma (Fred) Pierson of Avon Park, FL.
He was predeceased by three sisters, Bernice Benjamin, Evelyn Sizer, and Josephine Seely.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. in the St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Belmont. The Rev. Dawn Barrett will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Bath Volunteer Fire Dept. or to the charity of the donors' choice.
