Gordon E. Cross of 2647 West River Road passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 in the Buffalo General Hospital following a lengthy illness. Gordon was May 21, 1937 in Buffalo and was a son of Earl R. and Miriam Berg Cross. On March 29, 1964 In the Calvary Lutheran Church of Buffalo he married Gail M. Ranney, who survives. Gordon was a 1955 graduate of Burgard High School. Gordon served his country in the US Navy from Oct. 17, 1961 to Oct. 9, 1963 and also served in the Navy Reserves before and after his active duty. Gordon worked for the Courer Express in Buffalo for several years. He worked for Hoover Vacuum Cleaners in the AM&A's stores for a short period of time before being hired by AM&A's directly and working in several of there Buffalo area stores before moving to Olean in 1979 and retiring in 1990. Gordon worked for Shadow Dancers in Angelica for about 5 years. He then went to work for about 8 years at the Rehabilitation Center in Olean where he held many positions but was most noted for being the manager of the North Sixth Street Residence Home. He retired from the Rehabilitation Center in 2003. Gordon was very active in many roles in all of the churches he belonged to through out his life. Including the Gethsemane Church in Buffalo, Redeemers Church in Colden, St. Pal's Church in West Falls, Friendship Church in Amherst, Bethany Lutheran Church in Olean and he was currently a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Olean. In 2003, Gordon became active on the Olean School Board and has been a member of the board for the last 10 years. He was passionate about positively influencing young people, which is evident by the multitude of friends that called him Dad and Grandpa. Gordon was a faithful New York Yankees & Buffalo Sabres fan, loved coaching baseball, woodworking and was a member of the Rotary Club. His true enjoyment came from his family especially his grandchildren whom he dearly loved. In addition to his loving wife of 49 years are four children, Barbara A. Evans of Stevensville, Maryland, Brain M. (Susan) Gross of Olean, David G. (Gail) Cross of Cuba, and Daryl T. (Tabatha) Cross of Stanfield, NC; eight grandchildren, Jessica Pasieka, Mary Pasieka, Matthew Flick, Savannah Evans, Brendan Cross, Logan Cross, Micah Evans and Tyler Cross; a great grandson, Carter A. Mooney; and five God children, Peter Talboys, Kathleen Brogan, Sara Cheney, Debbie Davern & Emily Kaufmann. Friends will be received in the Bethany Lutheran Church on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at which time a Memorial Service will be held. The Rev. Marie Meeks, Pastor and The Rev. Dr. Derek Cheek, Pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, will co-officiated. Burial with full military honor's accorded by the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892, will be in the Mt. View Cemetery Veteran Field of Honor. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church 4th and Laurens Street, Olean, or to the Bethany Lutheran Church 6 Leo Moss Drive, Olean, or to the Olean City School District Foundation #410 West Sullivan Street, Olean, New York 14760.
