Garland I. Stanford, of 102 West Spring Street, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2016, at her home, unexpectedly from a short illness.
Garland was born April 13, 1949 in Oceanside, Long Island and was a daughter of Hobart E. and Margaret J. Gutschwager Collins. On August 21, 1973, she married her husband of 41 years, Charles E. Stanford, who predeceased her on January 9, 2015.
Garland graduated from Salamanca High School in 1968. She raised her children and also worked at a couple of different nursing homes as a nurse's aide. Garland then went to work at Birdseye Foods in Avon for a number of years before going to work at the DeSoto Hotel in the Housekeeping department, where she worked for several years, before she retired. She was formerly a member of the Olean Salvation Army. Garland enjoyed bingo, going to the casino, and spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Garland is survived by three children, Angel T. Young of Olean, Amy M. Stanford of Olean, and Matthew C. Stanford of Seattle, WA; three step children, Paul Stanford of Hornell, Edward Stanford of Fredonia, and Curtis Stanford of Phoenix, AZ; several grandchildren & great grandchildren; seven siblings, William Collins of Arkansas, Cathy Goebel & Carol Brown of Salamanca, Charles Collins of Springville, Rose Collins of Olean, Cindy Waite of Little Valley, and Brenda Collins of Olean; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her loving husband, Garland was predeceased by her parents; a daughter, Andrea Stanford; a step daughter, Ann Stanford; her twin brother, Gary Collins; and three siblings, Hobart Collins, Jr., Christopher Collins, and Dianna Collins.
Services will be private. The Rev. Tyrone A. Hall, Pastor of the Lighthouse Ministries, will officiate. Burial will be in the Arkport Cemetery.
