Esther L. Hammond of 1636 Olean-Portville Road passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 following a brief illness.
Mrs. Hammond was born on May 6, 1929 in Friendship and was a daughter of Lyle Lester and Helen Edith Cartwright Benjamin. On Oct. 9, 1948 she married Kenneth P. Hammond who pre-deceased her on June 19, 1973.
Esther was a 1947 graduate of Belmont Central School. She attended Westbrook Academy in Olean. Esther worked for Candyland Ice Cream Parlor in Belmont. She also worked for Olean Tile Company, Ickies Cookies, Weston's Shopper City and AVX Corporation. Esther was an Aid for Home Care and Hospice in Olean until her retirement in 1996.
Esther was a former member of Showers EUB Church and she loved her family and her cats. Esther enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles and collecting recipes.
Mrs. Hammond is survived by four daughters, Linda (Donald) Hollamby of Olean, Donna (Bruce) Osgood of Eldred, Susan Hammond of Eldred, and Lisa Hammond of Belmont; a son, Michael (Patti Cuthberson) Hammond of Ischua; eight grandchildren, Mark Hollamby of Olean, Shaun Hollamby of Bradford, Sheryl (Jeff) Findley of Westminster, MD, Janet (Gary) Hardy of South Dayton, Jason Osgood, US Navy in Hawaii, Rebecca (Robert) Ayers of Hinsdale, Christopher (Vicki Bialorucki) Hammond of Olean, and Scott (Beth) Hammond of Olean; 8 great grandchildren; four siblings, Phyllis Benjamin, Joanne Mason, Richard (Shirley) Benjamin, and Bernita Comstock, all of Belmont, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hammond was pre-deceased by two sisters, Suzanne Helen Benjamin in 1949, and Elaine Marie Benjamin Jewell; a brother, Harold "Keith" Benjamin; and a 2 year old granddaughter, Teresa Marie Hammond.
Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, Olean on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm and on Wednesday Dec. 8, 2010 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at which time Funeral and Committal Services will be held. The Rev. Bryan Garrett, Pastor of the Olean Community Evangelical Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean.
