Clifford H. Smith of 9033 Spring Street, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014 in the Olean General Hospital following an illness.
Clifford was born on Dec. 26, 1927 in Olean and was a son of Melvin and Elizabeth Whitcher Smith. On Nov. 25, 1951 in Cuba he married his loving wife of 48 years Helen L. Dalaba, who pre-deceased him on Jan. 26, 2000.
As a teenager Clifford worked on the farm before enlisting in the US Army during WWII. After the war he worked William Shot Roofing and then for Murry-Page Auto in Olean. Clifford began working at ACME in Cuba about 1949 and retired in 1991 after 42 years of service. After the war he also was a member of the Civil Defense in Cuba for a number of years. He was a former member of the Cuba VFW and Cuba American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, hunting & fishing, carpentry and farming. He will be remembered as a very generous, giving and caring man, who always put other people first.
Surviving Clifford are a daughter, Nancy E. (Michael) Papalia of Jamestown; four sons, Clifford A. (Diane) Smith of Cuba, Terry L. (Donna) Smith of Cuba, David H. (Rose Kish) Smith of Belmont, and Timmy M. Smith of Cuba; two grandchildren, Brian (Rosanna) Papalia and Karen (Jeremy) Martin; four great grandchildren, Alysa & Erica Papalia and Noah & Samuel Martin; a brother and a sister Charles Smith of Olean and Emma Hicklin of Cuba; and many nieces & nephews.
In addition to Clifford's wife he was pre-deceased by seven siblings, Melvin, John, Henry & Daniel Smith; and Margaret Chokrach, Maybell L. Glaske, and Mary Washington.
Friends will be received Monday, May 5, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #24 Genesee Pkwy. Cuba. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Cuba First Baptist Church. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Cuba Cemetery, Cuba.
