Cuba – Charlotte Y. Murphy "No Caption, Thank You"
Charlotte Y. Murphy, 99, of 254 West Shore Road, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2020, at her winter home in Clearwater Beach, FL, due to complications from Bullous Pemphigoid, a rare skin disease.
Charlotte was born on December 22, 1920 in Olean, NY and was a daughter of Arthur E. and Annie Dugan Yahn. On December 27, 1945 she married her husband of 54 years, Dr. Leo J. Murphy, who predeceased her on January 5, 2000.
Charlotte attended schools in the Olean School District and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. She attended the University of Buffalo Medical School and passed her final New York State Boards to practice medicine in New York State. She was offered an internship at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Before the final completion of her studies and graduation, she married her future husband recently home from World War II and started a family. Later she obtained a Master's Degree in Education at St. Bonaventure University and taught Kindergarten at St. Mary's in Olean, NY and St. Bonaventure School in Allegany, NY. She wrote a novel Hush-Hush Murder, under the pen name Agatha Murphy, which was published in 1978.
Charlotte had season tickets for the St. Bonaventure Basketball Games for over 60 years and was an avid concert goer. She had a strong faith in God and was a daily communicant at mass. Charlotte spent much of her time in prayer and in corresponding with friends around the world. She provided financial assistance to anyone who asked, as well as, donating to charitable causes for the poor received by mail. Charlotte was a member of the Dominican Laity and a parishioner of Our Lady of the Angels in Cuba, New York.
Charlotte is survived by; 3 sons, Leo J. Murphy, Jr. of Cuba, NY, Dr. Michael (Dale Marie) Murphy of Ormond Beach, FL, and Joseph P. Murphy of Cuba, NY; her daughter, Lolly (Aaron) Banks of Briarcliff Manor, NY; 4 grandchildren, Rachel Murphy-Banks, Lea Banks, and Gregory and Steven Murphy; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her loving husband, Charlotte was predeceased by her parents, Arthur E. and Annie Dugan Yahn; and her brothers, Arthur and William Yahn.
Friends will be received at the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Genesee Pkwy, Cuba, on Sunday, January 19, 2020 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, 202 S. Union Street on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 10:00 am.
