Charles K. Smith of 3796 Main Street passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 surrounded by his family following an illness. Mr. Smith was born on July 26, 1927 in Olean and was the son of the late Dorothy King Carnahan. On November 28, 1946 in Olean, he married Donna M. Koenig, who predeceased him on Dec. 21, 2008. Mr. Smith attended Olean School. He enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 16 and served in the Amphibious Force in the Pacific Theater during WW II. He was employed at Willard Electric for 35 years, starting as an apprentice and retiring as a partner. Mr. Smith is a 63 year member of the Hinsdale American Legion Post 1434, a 63 year member of the I.B.E.W. 106, a life member of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the U.S.S. L.M.S. association and a member of the Hinsdale Guys and Girls. He was also a member of the committee that started the Hinsdale Baseball Little League and he was a merit badge instructor for the Boy Scouts. Mr. Smith enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, travel, family outings, and spending the winters in his Florida home. Mr. King is survived by three sons, Charles K. Smith II of Caledonia, Daniel (Holly) Smith of Cincinnati, OH, and Gerald (Kathy) Smith of Olean; two granddaughters, Angee Greenaker of Castile, and Jami Perry of Elmira; Two grandsons, Kevin Smith of Hinsdale, and Shayne Smith of Frederick, MD; a sister, Jeanne M. Smith of Brevard, NC; four great-grandchildren, Josh Greenaker of Castile, Tori Greenaker of Castile, Mia Perry of Elmira, and Elana Perry of Elmira; several cousins; and a niece. Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. 646 E. State Street, Olean on Saturday, October 9, 2010 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at which time a Memorial Service will be held, The Rev. Barry Allaire officiating. Burial with full military honor's, accorded by the Hinsdale and Allegany American Legions, will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. Following the Graveside Service, a luncheon for family and friends will be held at the Hinsdale American legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hinsdale American Legion, Route 16, Hinsdale, NY 14743, or the Hinsdale Fire Department, Main Street, Hinsdale, NY 14743.
