Carl Arnold Tenglund of 101 N 21st Street passed away Friday, January 21, 2011 in the Sweden Valley Manor Nursing Home in Coudersport, Pa.
Born in Olean on July 29, 1917 and was a son of Carl and Jennie Johnson Tenglund. He married his wife of 56 years Alice Taylor on June 16, 1951 in the Imanual Lutheran Church in Olean. She pre-deceased him on March 15, 2007.
Mr. Tenglund was a long-time trombonist in Western New York dance and marching bands. He began his career as a musician in Hornell at the age of 14, and moved to Buffalo when he was 18. In the 1930's he played in various places in the Buffalo area, including the WBEN radio orchestra, on the Old Crystal Beach Boat, and with the Harold Austin orchestra. During World War II he played in the First Army Band in the European Theatre. Locally he played with various bands including the Al Cecchi and Wes Bowen Bands and the Al Pepin Quartet.
Mr. Tenglund served in the US Army during WWII for three years from Feb. 6, 1942 to June 10, 1945. Upon returning to Olean in 1948, he began working for the Olean Post Office as Letter Carrier and where he retired from 32 years latter.
Mr. Tenglund was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Olean Enchanted Mountains Masonic Lodge 252 F & AM, Olean American Legion, the American Federation of the Musicians in Olean and Buffalo, and he was a life member the Olean-Jamestown and Buffalo Musicians Associations.
Surviving Mr. Tenglund are his daughter Ann M. Tenglund and a niece Janet Drake both of Olean.
In addition to his Wife and parents, Mr. Tenglund was pre-deceased by a brother Arthur Tenglund and a sister Margaret Drake.
Friends will be received on Monday, Jan. 24, 2011 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home, Inc. #646 E. State Street, Olean, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 at 10:00 am. The Rev. Dr. Derek J. Cheek, Pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery, Allegany with full military honors accorded be the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892 ritual team.
