Died: July 2, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse healthcare facility, Allegany, NY.
Daughter of Joseph and Mildred Kloten Murray of Buffalo, NY.
She was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on August 15, 1955 and professed her final religious vows on August 16, 1962.
Sister Joseph Francis Murray faithfully lived the Mission of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany for over 55 years. In Buffalo, she attended the grade school at St. Margaret's Parish from 1938-46, followed by high school at the Holy Angels' Academy from 1946-50. Upon entering the convent, she continued her education at St. Elizabeth Teacher College, now known as St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, NY. In 1967, she received a B.S. degree in Education, with a minor in History. During the summers, Sister Joseph Francis pursued her studies in Library Science at several institutions; Glassboro State in Glassboro, NJ; Marywood College in Scranton, PA; Geneseo State University in Geneseo, NY and the University of Southern Florida in Tampa, FL, receiving an M.L.S. degree in Library Sciences in 1975.
Sister Joseph Francis Murray's ministry was primarily in education in several Congregational schools located throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Florida. From 1971-77, she ministered in Library Sciences in Fort Myers, FL and after a move to Tampa, FL, ministered briefly as a Social Worker at St. Joseph's Hospital. This was followed by Pastoral ministry at St. Benedict the Moor, Winston-Salem and additional Librarian duties at Stella Maris, Melbourne, FL. In 1986, she served at the Maurawood Residence in West Palm Beach, FL counseling and tutoring unwed mothers. This time was followed by a period of parish ministry at St. Mary's Convent in West Palm Beach, FL and St. Christopher's Parish in Hobe Sound, FL. In 1989, Sister Joseph Francis moved to Tampa, FL to serve as an Intake Counselor at the Agency for Community Treatment Services, Inc. (ACTS). In 2010, Sister retired to St. Clare Convent in Tampa and was welcomed home to the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, NY in 2011. Sister's avocation was creating various crafts for non-profit organizations.
Sister Joseph Francis is predeceased by her parents and brothers, Joseph and Richard. She is survived by her sisters, Nan Marn and Jeanne Driscoll, a brother, Lawrence, a brother-in-law, Stephen Marn and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A Wake Service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY.
